The CDs’ Cut Episode 2. Dr Rupa Joshi

Tuesday May 02, 2023
In this mini-series of my podcast, I am chatting to inspirational PCN Clinical Directors about what inspires them, and how they have taken the apparently impossible job of Clinical Director of a network of GP practices allocated by geography rather than by shared cultures, ideals and purpose, and united them to make a positive difference to the network as well as to their population.
This episode is a conversation with my GP colleague from the Primary Care Transformation Team, Dr Rupa Joshi, whose practice is in Wokingham and who is the co-Clinical Director of Wokingham North Primary Care Network. The success of this PCN is a testament to the inspiring clinical leadership of Rupa and her colleague, and the story of her involvement is an inspiration.
Rupa is also workforce lead for Berkshire West Primary Care Networks and Learning and Development Clinical SRO at NHS confederation. S

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“Pick the battles that you can make some progress with.” Alastair Olby, 2022
In this episode of Hang up your Superhero Cape, I talk to Leadership Development expert and facilitator, Alastair Olby about the work he has been doing with new, young GPs and his insights into the challenges they face, as well as some possible ways forward.
Here’s the link to the keyboard shortcuts for GPs video by Dr Paula Wright.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZT_UOpvBaI
Alastair has been helping people step up into leadership roles and lead change for the past 18 years, with a mission to partner with organisations and individuals whose focus is on improving life for their customers/patients, employees, and the communities they serve.
An NLP trainer, Certified Professional Facilitator and Transformative Coach, Alastair works with a wide range of clients from his base in the Swiss Alps. A ‘specialist generalist,’ Alastair’s work is diverse, spanning organisational change, team and workgroup functioning along with working as a coach in business and in sport, but at its core lies the exploration of where our moment-to-moment experience comes from, and the profound impact that deepening this understanding can have on how we live. He offers transformative team experiences in the Alps away from regular day-to-day busy-ness, and currently runs the Leadership and Quality Improvement elements for several regions’ Fellowship schemes.
Working with newly qualified GPs so early in their careers gives him hope for the future: he finds it a real privilege working with so many bright young minds, and senses the health service will be in excellent hands in the coming years.
Alastair lives in the Swiss canton du Valais, is president of the local ski club, and with his son in a feeder team for the Swiss Alpine Ski Team, is heavily involved in competitive skiing. He’s the team’s go-to cinematographer for their promotional work, and he now blends his passion for cinematography with his cultural change work, documenting stories and demonstrating new ways of working.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
“It's more than just beetroot!” Dr Indra Barathan, 2022
In this episode of Hang up your Superhero Cape, I talk to GP, Dr Indra Barathan about her Functional Medicine practice and the impact on patients of taking a broad, holistic view of their health and lifestyle
Dr Indra graduated from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1997 and worked as an NHS GP until 2015 when she opened her specialist functional medical practice to provide personalised functional medicine consultations. Indra now has one of the few multi-disciplinary practices in the UK and her team comprises doctors, health coaches, nutritional therapists and a psychiatrist. Indra's passion is helping her patients learn how they have got to where they have got to and what they can do to help themselves shift towards vitality. She loves supporting patients with complex medical needs, hormonal problems and gut issues. Her mission is to educate the world about functional medicine through her practice, her free webinars, group care, and the Festival of Functional Medicine which she launched in 2021.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"If we want to make changes to a system, it's best to do it from a place of understanding what is going on, from a place of clear-headed common-sense and wisdom, rather than from a place of anger" Giles P Croft 2022
In this episode of Hang up Your Super Hero Cape, Giles tells me about his work on resilience with groups of workers in social care, and demonstrating how what we do works so well for people.
Dr Giles P Croft is a writer, speaker, coach and trainer, all of which are underpinned by an understanding of the innate health and well being that governs all our lives. A psychology graduate and former NHS surgeon, he left the world of hospital medicine to seek happiness in a variety of careers, including health informatics, cycling journalism, high street retail with his wife and public speaking, before coming to the realisation that happiness is indeed an ‘inside job.’ In 2021, Giles founded the Reconnect to Innate Resilience course for groups of hard-working professionals, that helps staff to better understand the way in which they are experiencing life’s circumstances, thereby reducing stress levels without the need for coping techniques or time-consuming rituals. A recent UK-wide meta-analysis of more than 200 wellbeing interventions found this course’s unique approach was demonstrably the most impactful of all psychological interventions, as measured by a validated mental wellbeing scale. Giles coaches private clients out in the hills of the Brecon Beacons National Park; runs a monthly online meet-up called Wellbeing Wednesdays for an international audience; and has a self-study online course called A Fresh Perspective on Wellbeing, all of which are available through his website. For more information, check out Giles' website: http://www.gilespcroft.com.
